In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to decorate a Tea bowl and witness the excitement of the RAKU firing process.
Japanese in origin, RAKU loosely translates as ‘pleasure’ or ‘enjoyment’. This exciting open flame firing method dates back to the 16th Century and its historical roots are based around creating rustic, though precious, tea-bowls for the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.
The Western interpretation is more usually known for the drama and excitement of the rapid ‘live’ kiln firing, unfolding with the fun, spectacle and incidental surprises associated with this process.
Whilst waiting for the kiln to fire, you will have the opportunity to hand build your own T-bowl inspired by the Japanese ‘Chawan’ vessels. You can take your clay work home un-fired.
Please bring: An apron and wear sturdy shoes and snack to eat
