Children's Paper Folding Workshops
14 DECEMBER 2025, SEAGULL THEATRE
As part of her residency with Messums Creative, artist Kaori Kato delivered a series of six origami-based workshops across Lowestoft, working with adults, schools, college students, families, and the wider public. In partnership with Battery of Ideas and The Seagull Theatre, Kaori led sessions that explored the Japanese traditions of paper folding, structure, and transformation through accessible, hands-on making. The programme included an adult star-making workshop, two sessions with Year 4 classes (reaching 25 pupils per class), a presentation and practical workshop with East Coast College art students, a public drop-in session attended by over 40 people, and a free family workshop for children aged 8–14. Across all sessions, participants demonstrated concentration, resilience, collaboration, and perseverance, discovering how simple materials could support complex thinking and creative expression. College students gained insight into Kaori’s international career and practice before developing washi lanterns and scaling ideas into wearable forms, while school pupils and families worked collectively to create modular blocks, lanterns, and pop-up envelopes. The drop-in and family sessions highlighted the importance of open, visible, welcoming spaces in the centre of town, where making acted as a catalyst for conversation, connection, and wellbeing. The residency demonstrated the power of accessible materials, artist-led facilitation, and inclusive formats to inspire creativity, support social connection, and leave participants with skills and confidence to continue making beyond the workshops.
