In this course you will be introduced to the classic lettering style of the Versals*. During the day, you will be guided through the process which Ursula uses for painting a word or short sentence. The group will explore letter formation, letter weight and spacing. To start with we will practise by using oxides and brushes on paper and towards the end of the day we will progress to making calligraphic brush strokes to complete our ceramic pieces. Examples of lettering will be provided. * Versals have a rich and colourful history. The term Versal was introduced to describe the highly decorated letters used in manuscripts as early as the 8th century. Versal letters are based on Roman capital proportions and are constructed letters; they are ‘built-up’ through outline and serif. They can be left as outline or filled in a contrasting colour. Versals are used on clay and ceramic surface for their clarity and majestic appearance. Ursula Waechter studied three-dimensional Design/Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art and moved to Aldermaston to learn more about wood-fired tin-glazed earthenware. Aldermaston Pottery which was founded by Alan Caiger-Smith in 1955 produced very well-known decorated tin glaze pottery and lustre ware. Whilst at Aldermaston, she begun to practice lettering, Versals, being the preferred letter form there. Ursula Waechter is now best known for her distinctive voice within the contemporary European tin-glaze tradition.
