This workshop at Messums Studio invites participants to follow in the footsteps of the great English watercolour masters—John Sell Cotman, J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, and Edward Seago—artists who expanded the boundaries of watercolour painting and captured the shifting light and atmosphere of the British landscape. Working directly outdoors, the course focuses on mark-making and composition in response to the weather and environment, encouraging close observation of nature and expressive use of brushwork, tone, and colour. With guidance on simplifying forms, structuring compositions, and embracing the spontaneity of the medium, participants will develop a personal and painterly response to the beautiful landscape of Wiltshire.

Born in Faedis, North East Italy in 1990, Francesco Poiana attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and then the celebrated Albicocco fine art printing workshop in Udine before studying for a Masters degree at Central St Martins College of Art in London. He joined the Royal Drawing School in 2019. The discovery and development of new techniques in printing and painting are an essential part of Poiana’s work.

Poiana’s work represents an intimate voyage — towards the image of an intangible place, imagined only in daydreams.
