Messums Studios is proud to support the work of Horatio's Garden by offering clay workshops to staff and patients at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, Salisbury District Hospital

Our work in the community incudes our support for clay workshops at Horatio’s Garden. Horatio’s Garden nurtures the well-being of people after spinal injury in beautiful, vibrant sanctuaries within the heart of NHS spinal injury centres across the country.

Since the Summer of 2023, Messums Studios has supported and overseen the delivery of regular clay sessions at Horatio's Garden at Salisbury District Hospital. The sessions delivered in blocks of six are expertly led by art therapist and artist/tutor Lynne Heaton, who is also Messums Studios’ regular freelance tutor. The individual projects are composed by Lynne and Mirka, mindful of the fact that the people at Horatio’s Garden have profound and life-changing injuries. The objective of each project is to allow each participant the experience of learning a new skill, to create as an artist, achieving an outcome to be treasured and to be proud of.

Our sessions are described as a great way to bring people together, build community, provide a distraction from difficulties, and learn new skills. 100% of people with spinal injury said that the Horatio’s Garden programme has improved their wellbeing, 95% said that it improved their mental health, and 96% said that Horatio’s Garden creative workshops provide a distraction from pain. We are very proud to be able to play our part in these statistics.

"II really enjoyed the ceramic workshops with Lynne; it’s something I never would have normally done. "
