WORKSHOPS AT THE SEAGULL, LOWESTOFT

In collaboration with The Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft, Messums Creative delivered six creative workshops in the community ahead of the opening of Messums East at the Old Post Office in Autumn 2026.

LET'S SIT DOWN TOGETHER | HAND-BUILDING WORKSHOP WITH MIRKA GOLDEN-HANN
In April 2025 a ‘Ceramics Pew Group’-inspired clay day, titled “Let’s Sit Down Together”, was delivered by Mirka Golden-Hann with the generous help of East Coast College, where the final clay pieces were fired. ‘Let’s Sit Down Together’ was a clay project proposed and delivered mindful of the fact that up to twenty potential strangers would spend the whole day in each other’s company. Composing a project through which the participants would have the opportunity to get to know each other by sharing stories was at the forefront of the teaching artist’s mind when setting up the content proposal.

PLEIN-AIR WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP WITH FRANCESCO POIANA
A free en plein-air watercolour workshop explored the expressive and fluid qualities of watercolour while capturing the movement, light, and atmosphere of the sea.Set in a stunning coastal location, this immersive workshop encouraged participants to observe and interpret the natural surroundings, painting directly from life.

JOURNEYS THROUGH PRINT : COASTAL MEMORIES & EXPRESSIVE MARK-MAKING
This hands-on printmaking course introduced participants to the versatile and expressive potential of monotype; a creative print method which combines painting, drawing and print. During a playfully creative day with Edward Scott participants explored new materials, techniques and ways of expression.

FELT MAKING WORKSHOP WITH LYNNE HEATON
Making course with Messums Studio's Lynne Heaton teaching the process of wet felting. Participants had the chance to create a landscape scene to understand the process followed by the chance to create their own design.

MAKING FACES | AN INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAITURE IN CLAY WITH VALENTINA ZLATAROVA
In this one day workshop participants learnt how to hand-build the mask of a face with water-based clay. Valentina taught the fundamentals of portraiture and gave step-by-step guidance on how to build the human face based on a photograph.
